Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be known as Recognition of Current Competency or Skills Assessment. RPL is simply another pathway, other than undertaking formal study, to achieving Statements of Attainment for individual units of competency.
An RPL assessment is a process of gathering of evidence that allows us o evaluate your skill, knowledge and attributes against the required industry standards. We will provide you with feedback and certify the end result through our joint venture RTO partners.
Industry standards or benchmarks are set out in a unit of competency. A unit of competency specifies knowledge and skills that apply to the standard of performance expected in the workplace.
Every qualification is made up of a number of Core Units of competency and Elective Units of competency. A ingle unit of competency is the smallest unit that can be assessed and recognized.
Within a unit of competency, elements describe the tasks or key activities of the work covered by the unit.
During an RPL assessment/skills assessment we collect evidence that proves you:
- Hold the necessary knowledge
- Can apply that knowledge successfully in the workplace
- Can perform tasks to the level set out in te construction industry in the units of competency and to the level specified by the qualification you are interested in.
If the assessor determines that you have the required skills and knowledge at the level and standard required, you will be assessed as “Competent”
Being competent means that you:
Are able to perform specific tasks required to do the job to the standard set by the construction industry
- Know the reason the task needs to be one
- Understands and follow correct procedures to complete the task
- Know what resources are required to complete the task
- Follow the correct and safe use of these resources
- Know what to do if something goes wrong
- Can use these same skills in different work contexts
The assessment tools and practices developed by us at TN Construction Services can benefit you in ways such as:
- Gaining eligibility for licenses
- Reduce study load
- Re-entry into the workforce
- Job promotion or improvement
- Career change
- Entry to further education or training courses
The evidence of competency can be assessed in a number of ways, including:
- Your own work samples
- Practical demonstration of skills
- Answers to questions
- Written or verbal references
- Training records
- Industry awards
- Licenses, résumé, work history, photo of work samples, testimonials
Having little or no documentary evidence of your industry experience is not a barrier to gaining recognition. This will mean we at TN Construction Services will need to rely more on questioning, referee validation and assignment folio completion for evidence of your experience.
